April Goals and Challenges 2013

Whew!! I finally did get my taxes done and dropped off last Wednesday! I wanted to pull my hair out during the process but it all finally came together. Now we wait to see what the final outcome is.

I have found that by keeping track of my grocery spending and eating out I can truly assess how we'll we are doing on our budget. As you can see here, our grocery spending is Out Of Control. That being said, we are striving to greatly improve for the Month of April.

By writing things down I find myself more accountable so I am using the same method for my eBay store. I am going to keep track of when and how many I listed and the daily sales. This will keep me on track and help me to grow my eBay sales.

What do you do to keep track of your goals?

I create an online "ticker" (tickerfactory.com) each month to track how many new listings I get up. Sometimes I meet my goal, sometimes I don't, but I like knowing where I stand as the month progresses.

I don't set goals - never have. I have always thought that a goal will limit my experience in life and for me, it works really well. The way I keep control of my spending at the grocery store is that I use a calculator and input every single item cost that I throw in the basket - I have done it for over 30 years and not only does it keep my spending more normal, it has also made me a pro at predicting the cost (usually within $5) of a cart of groceries. I should be a sideshow !

For the last 3 years my husband and I have followed Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace teachings. We use cash for about 80% of our groceries and eating out and when the cash is gone we have to eat what's at the house. We have a fixed amount of money each month. At the end of each month we look at where we are and see whether we need to adjust the amounts. This has worked well for us once we got the hang of it. I'd definitely recommend reading Dave's book, The Total Money Makeover. Our library has it and it really gets you motivated. We're in our mid 50s and are thinking about retiring so we wanted to know that we could live within our means before we actually hit retirement. So far it's working well. Good luck

Ashley: For a long time I didn't do anything either! Very random about my ebay listing.

Kari, You actually inspired me to keep track of my listings. I just like using a notebook for everything :)

Kellie, I am on the fence about goals. I set them to see if I can surpass them. Then when I don't, I get depressed. But, I need to push myself on getting more organized with eBay and deciding if it is going to be worth all the work I put in to it.

I signed up for Mint.com last month and it keeps track of your spending in each category. I almost fell over when I saw how much money I spend eating out. It adds up quickly! The same with listing. Having a goal and writing it down is a great way to be accountable.
